Vishnu Sahasranama
The Thousand Names of Vishnu, as Bhishma Taught Them
The Vishnu Sahasranama is not a separate book. It is a chapter of the Mahabharata. Bhishma, dying on a bed of arrows, recites it to Yudhishthira. Here are all the names, with their meanings in English. Learn them one shloka a day.
On the bed of arrows
The war is over. Bhishma is dying.
Bhishma lies on his bed of arrows, waiting for the hour of his death. Yudhishthira is now king. He comes to his grandfather to learn what a king must know. Across the Shanti Parva and the Anushasana Parva, the twelfth and thirteenth books of the Mahabharata, Bhishma teaches him dharma in great detail.
Near the end of the Anushasana Parva, Yudhishthira asks the deepest questions of all.
"Who is the single divinity in the world? Who is the single one who is the refuge? Who should a man praise and worship to obtain what is beneficial? In your view, what is the supreme dharma among all kinds of dharma? What mantras should be chanted to free a creature from the bondage of this cycle of life?"
Bhishma's answer
Vishnu, and his thousand names.
Bhishma's answer is Vishnu. He calls him Purushottama, the supreme being, and Pundarikaksha, the lotus-eyed one.
"It is my view that this is the supreme dharma among all kinds of dharma. A man must always devotedly praise Pundarikaksha. … He is the supreme refuge."
Then he recites the names, one after another. That recitation is the Vishnu Sahasranama.
