Shiva Sahasranama
The Thousand Names of Shiva, as the Mahabharata Gives Them
The Shiva Sahasranama in the Mahabharata is a chapter of the Anushasana Parva. Krishna tells it to Yudhishthira, as the sage Upamanyu once told it to him in the Himalayas. Here are all the names, with their meanings in English. Learn them one shloka a day.
A question for Bhishma
Bhishma passes the question to Krishna.
Bhishma lies on his bed of arrows, teaching Yudhishthira what a king must know. In the Anushasana Parva, the thirteenth book of the Mahabharata, Yudhishthira asks about Shiva.
"O grandfather! Tell me the truth about the different names of the lord Isha Shambhu, the tawny one who represents great fortune, the one who withdraws the universe."
Bhishma does not answer it himself. He says that Krishna, who is sitting with them, can tell him. So Krishna speaks.
In the Himalayas
Krishna goes to pray for a son.
Krishna tells a story from his own life. His wife Jambavati asked him for a son, brave and good, like him. Garuda, the great eagle, carried Krishna to the Himalayas, to the hermitage of the sage Upamanyu, a devotee of Shiva. Once, long before, Shiva had come to Upamanyu in the form of Indra, to test him. Then Shiva showed himself, seated with Uma, his wife, on his bull.
Upamanyu told Krishna to worship Shiva too. Krishna did. Shiva and Uma appeared to him and granted him a son, Samba.
Churned from ten thousand
Upamanyu gives Krishna the names.
Then Upamanyu told Krishna the names of Shiva. Brahma, he said, knew ten thousand of them. The rishi Tandi, who worshipped Shiva for ten thousand years, brought them down from Brahma's world. Upamanyu chose the best. In his own words:
"Like clarified butter being churned out of curds, I will use my mind to churn names from those."
He called them the one thousand and eight names of Sharva, which is another name for Shiva. At the end he named the teachers who handed the hymn down. It went from Brahma to Indra, to Mrityu, who is Death, to the Rudras, to Tandi, to Shukra, to Gautama, to Manu, to Narayana and the Sadhyas, to Yama, to Nachiketa, to Markandeya, and from Markandeya to Upamanyu himself.

All the names, shloka by shloka
Each name is shown in English letters with its meaning, and almost always in Devanagari. In the Critical Edition, some names come twice, and the names can be counted in more than one way. So this list has fewer than a thousand and eight. A name that comes twice is marked where it comes again. A name can be read in more than one way. The meanings here are one reading of each.
